P.S I Love You

When romance films come to mind, we typically think of the usual plot line.  Two people unexpectedly fall in love and face some sort of hardship along the way. In Richard LaGravenese’s P.S I Love You, is a romantic film that has unique elements to it, which separate it from this typical plot.
In the average romance genre, it always seems as if the main female characters talk about one thing and one thing only: boys. However, the main role in P.S I Love You, is a girl named Holly who strays from this and carries out many conversations over a variety of topics. She is the lead role in the movie and it is about her slowly overcoming the death of her husband as he wrote her a letter for each day to help her get through it. Holly relies a lot on her family and particularly her two best girl friends: Sharron and Denise. There are scenes in which they talk about random things such as music, old memories, and going to parties (P.S I Love You film). These women partake in everyday activities and events together as they help Holly grow and overcome the tragic hardship in her life.
We see very real aspects of Holly’s character as a woman, as the audience witnesses her sad, heartbroken, happy, and through both good times and bad. We see her looking rough and at her worst as well as pretty and dressed up. We watch Holly grow as a character throughout the movie, as she becomes more independent and learns to grow from the devastation of her husband passing away. Holly realizes she can do it on her own and really shows aspects of what it takes to be a strong woman in the midst of hard times (P.S I Love You film).

After watching the movie, I saw that it clearly passed the “bechdel test.” Holly played a role that showed an honest depiction of what it would be like to go through such a tragedy. I wasn’t surprised that it passed the test because I had previously seen the movie and remembered thinking that Holly depicted a well-played female role. There were definite points where she was seen as a weak character, but I feel it is only fair due to the fact her husband had passed away. The female roles were the focus of the film and were given strong leads that represented women well.
