Option 2- Aubrey Cameron

Playlist for The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Long Hot Summer by Keith Urban
At the beginning of this novel we are introduced to Edna and Robert in the middle of their summer vacation. When Edna and Robert walk up from the beach, Edna’s husband makes the comment that they are both “Burnt beyond recognition (Chopin, pg. 4).” At this point I realized that Robert and Edna were probably more than friends and would be spending a lot of time together whether her husband liked it or not. I think Keith Urban’s song would be a good intro to the story because he sings about spending the summer with someone who makes you happy and who you can have a good time with. I think this could also be used for some foreshadowing.

Broken by Lifehouse
When Edna does not express much interest in what her husband is saying he checks on the children and insists that Edna take care of Raoul as he is sick. After the disagreement with her husband Edna ends up outside crying. “She began to cry a little, and wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her peignoir. Blowing out the candle, which her husband had left burning, she slipped her bare feet into a pair of satin mules at the foot of the bed and went out on the porch, where she sat down in the wicker chair and began to rock gently to and fro (Chopin, pg. 6).” At this point Edna has broken down. As the song Broken says, Edna is “falling apart”, “damaged at best”, “with a broken heart” just trying to figure out what to do with her life.

Bring me to Life by Evanesence
I think Bring me to Life would be a good song for the scene when Robert leaves the Grand Isle and Edna realizes that she has feelings for Robert. At this point in the novel Edna is awake. She knows she doesn’t like the life she has been apart of and now realizes she is happy with Robert and doesn’t want him to leave. Edna comes to some understanding that she wants or needs Robert and is no longer going to go along with the social norms. Robert has “waken” her up from her “sleep”.

Dirty Little Secret by The All American Rejects
Edna has two men other than her husband in her life. She spends most of her summer with Robert while her husband is working and when Robert leaves she then spends her time with Alcee.  If Edna were to admit to the affairs it would ruin her whole families reputation and cause more unwanted problems. Which is why I believe Dirty Little Secret would be a good song to play while Edna and Robert are on the beach, at the end of the novel when they kiss or any other time they are together. It could also be used when Edna is spending time with Alcee.

When I get Where I’m Going by Brad Paisley Feat. Dolly Parton
Throughout the whole novel Edna is trying to figure out what to do with her life. Does she stay unhappy with her husband and children and act the way society believes she should act or rebel against it and do what she thinks will make her happy. When I get Where I’m Going would be a great song for the final scene where Edna is walking into the water and drowns as it is implied. The song is about someone who dies and goes to heaven and experiences freedom. This could resemble Edna’s desire for freedom, and her finally taking control of her life. It is also a slower more sentimental song, which fits in with the soft and sad mood of this final scene.
