Blog topic 4

The artist must possess the courageous soul that dares and defies.” (XXXIX) Edna finds an escape with her art and her transition to becoming an artist. I think that everyone can relate to this in a way that they have their escape from the real world. I know in high school, swimming was a way for me to forget all of my problems for a few hours and just breathe for a while. Swimming was something I loved to do and it took away the distractions of school and home. I never really saw it as something I had to do, but something I wanted and needed to do. I would have gone crazy sitting in my house everyday after school and on the weekends if I wasn’t keeping myself busy. I think that is what happened to Edna. She had too much time to think about her life, which made her build it up in her head to be much worse than it was. Seeing Edna painting could be a way for her to release any feelings and the pains of her home life.
As we can see Edna seems to take the “easy” way out and take her own life. Everyone has bad days where they think it would be easier to just give up, but its only one day. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. Not everyone gets a tomorrow so why would you risk not having the chance to live another day. “The years that are gone seem like dreams—if one might go on sleeping and dreaming—but to wake up and find—oh! well! Perhaps it is better to wake up after all, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions all one’s life”, said Doctor Mandelet (XXXVIII). This quote really spoke to me in a way that no matter how bad something is, tomorrow that will be in the past and it is the beginning of a new day. I think Edna really could have used someone to tell her this much earlier in her life. I know that I have people in my life that know me well enough to know when something is wrong and I think Edna didn’t have someone who knew her enough to help her in a time of need.
