Chelsea Stevens Option 2

I have composed a soundtrack for "On Divorce" by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, this piece was incredibly interesting to me and I felt as if I could feel the pain of the women during this time period. I've also attached the links to the songs on YouTube below each description.

1. Save Him By Justin Nozuka
This song tells the story of a young child listening to his mother get beaten by his father. It evokes a vast amount of emotions of abuse in a household. There is such agony within the children and mother. This connected with Stanton when she said, "Behold the agonies of those young hearts as they see the only being on earth they love, dragged around the room by the hair of her head..." (Stanton 243). This song elicites so much emotion much like this speech, it causes the listener to really think about the issue at hand. I think this music would make the scene incredibly intense because they are both so graphic and really play into the pathos of this piece.

2. If I Were a Boy By Beyonce
Stanton talks often about the differences between men and women in everyday life, particularly when it comes to the law. This song explains all the social differences between men and women in today's world from the eyes of Beyonce. I think this song helps to explain the vast differences among sexes. Stanton says, "The advantages all seem to be on one side and the penalties on the other" (Stanton 238). This is also demonstrated in the song, showing that men can get away with various things such as answering phones, and not get in trouble. Beyonce has an interesting take on the modern differences among the sexes.

3. Nobody's Home By Avril Lavigne
This song explains how a child feels in a home that does not have love. Avril sings, "she wants to go home but nobody's home" meaning that there are physically people in the home, but they lack love and relationships leaving the child to feel alone. This can be seen in Stanton's piece as well, "the misfortune of being trained in the atmosphere of a household where love is not the law..." (Stanton 250). This would be a great song for this scene because it demonstrates how the child in a dysfunctional household feels. These negative emotions are brought upon them by someone else, not themselves.

4. More Than Words By Extreme
I think this song sheds a positive light on how love should be for this speech. This song talks about how a healthy marriage should be. There should be a love that is "more than words" and if neither party feels this than it will not be a sound marriage and environment. "There can be no heaven without love..." (Stanton 244). This soundtrack is in need of some pick me ups so I felt this would open the door to explaining how a good relationship looks. This song would lighten the mood slightly while showing that not all marriages at this time where destructive.

5. Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys
I think this song could greatly represent the power that women are being to feel. I imagine that it took an immense amount of courage for Stanton and other women to speak out and express their opinions on this subject. I feel as if this song can speak to the entire women's rights movement. It is extremely fitting because the women in this song has a sense of pride, power and confidence and it is those traits that allowed women to gain their freedom.
