Soundtrack to A Bastard Out of Carolina

Song #1: Thrift Shop-Macklemore

"I'm digging, I'm digging, I'm searching right through that luggage
One man's trash is another man's come up"

A reoccurring theme throughout A Bastard Out of Carolina is the importance of trash and being frugal in how they live. We can see that the Boatwright's have grown up in poverty and most work hard to get and make the things they need. One of the ways in which we see this is in the time that Bone spends with her Aunt Raylene. Together they spend time by the river collecting garbage that has been washed up in the roots of the tree's, collecting items like a, "baby-carriage cover, tricycle wheels, shoes, plastic dishes, jump-rope handles, ragged clothes, and once the headlight off a Harley-Davidson motorcycle" (Allison 181-182).

Song #2: Amazing Grace

"Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me"

Gospel music is another reoccurring theme throughout the novel that holds a very important tie to Bones. Her love for gospel music inspired her to want, "to be a gospel singer and be loved by the whole wide world" (Allison 141). Through her relationships with Shannon and her experience with the Revival circuits, she develops a deep love for the music and feels so moved by the words and the voices. She longs to be loved and adored like those who sing the music. Songs like this one, and any other gospel song can move Bones to tears and including this in the soundtrack would be instrumental to developing her passion of music.

Song #3: We are Family-Sister Sledge

"We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family"

In an ironic sense this song represents not how close they are as a family, but how because they are family they are close. Throughout the novel the Boatwright's boast a lot about their family name and the reputation that comes along with being a Boatwright. The sisters all have a bond in a sense they have all encountered similar struggles raising children and having husbands, and also through their relationships with their own mother.

Song #4: Alyssa Lies

"Alyssa lies to the classroom
Alyssa lies everyday at school
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

Although Bone was never questioned about her abuse at school, she lied to her family about what Daddy Glen did to her. Bone suffers from a lot of physical and emotional abuse, but she never talks to anyone about it. Even when the truth comes out at the end of the novel, "[she] didn't want anyone knowing anything" (Allison  297). When the chance came for her to finally put an end to the abuse from Daddy Glen, she became paralyzed with the thought that there are others out there like him and she could not trust anyone. The abuse that Bone suffered, damaged her psychologically and made her distrusting of anyone, including authority figures.

Song #5: Don't Laugh at Me

"Don't laugh at me
Don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain
In God's eyes were all the same"

This song I believe represents the struggle that Ruth had both with herself and from what she witnessed growing up. She always knew people were talking about her and her family for being trash. It is always reflected how having the title "illegitimate" on Ruth Anne's birth certificate affected her. The labels that the Boatwright's had affected them not only psychologically, but prevented them from obtaining what they wanted to achieve. Beauty and ugliness are constantly touched on throughout the novel, giving the importance to looks and the attention you receive from them.

After choosing a soundtrack for A Bastard Out of Carolina, I realize that many of the themes are very depressing. The situations they encounter are very trying on the family, leading to a very melancholy soundtrack.
